High Tea at the Royale Tea Room

The Royale Tea Room in La Jolla Cove is running a Groupon Special. A company running a Groupon is usually a red flag for me. Its either a fledgling business with a change on management or product offerings, or one that is brand spanking new with no reputation to speak of. The Royale Tea room was an example of the latter.

I consider myself to be a quite a High Tea Connoisseur at this point, so we decided to give it a shot.

They slipped us in for an appointment at 4pm for a same day appointment on a Saturday. Either they decided to serve us afterhours or the reservation system isn't quite formalized yet. We were having tea at an awkward time completely alone in the whole establishment.

The walls and decor were a little bare so I mostly focus on the table setting and food for the photos below.
I am wearing new nail polish from Olivia Palmeros new line. This one is called "rosebud"
With the groupon special we had the choice of one tea and two sandwiches. I think this corresponds to the "Junior High Tea" on the menu. We ordered Mango Citrus white tea as well as the cucumber creme cheese sandwich and the cucumber marmalade sandwich.

The mango citrus tea was very good. It took a very long time to steep though. They gave us luke warm water which is considerate from a health and safety standpoint but not so great from a fulfilling tea adventure. It was also broiling hot outside and they didn't have an air conditioner, so we didn't mind that it wasn't ultra hot

When Alex heard that we were each going to get a half sandwhich and be sent on our way we started making plans on where to eat in La Jolla Cove for an early dinner. The tray came as a relief. It looked like a full meal.

The top level had fruit with grapes, apples, and raspberries, the second level had our creme cheese sandwiches, and the bottom level had fudge rum cake, powdered sugar bon bons, and some sort of apricot tart. These are guesses, the deserts weren't introduced. Not to be a snob or anything, but normally aren't the deserets introduced?

We also received scones. I am not sure if these come standard with the groupon. I was rather pompously coiffed and we were the last people in the house before closing, so these may have been a freebie.

It came with a raspberry jam and devonshire creme.

This is the raspberry Jam, which was quite delicious.

The devonshire creme was lackluster in comparison. The color was also unexpected.

We ate the snacks quite quickly. It was filling but a completely protein-less meal. The tea wrapped up in about an hour, which is awfully fast for a tea service in my opinion.

Location is a huge selling point for this tea house. We got to walk around the cove afterwards, which is always a treat. The Royale Tea house also has this lovely picnic basket option, which I believe we should have taken in retrospect. That way we can set on the lovely cove instead of hanging out in a stark white room with odd tastes in low quality steam punk tea paintings.

Overall I had a perfectly adequately time. There are so many nice tea rooms in San Diego, I think I will try to make a whole round of them before getting back to the Royale Tea room. They still need time to find their footing.
